One laundry load can release millions of microplastics into the wastewater stream. While treatment plants are able to remove
a certain percentage of fibers from water, discharge can still contain a large number of microplastics. Here's how you can reduce
microfiber shedding from your laundry.
• Wash cold. Less fibers are emitted during a cold wash compared to a hot one.
• Try to use less detergent, since it can increase the number of fibers released.
• Front-loading washing machines produce less fibers compared to top-loading ones.
• Drying machines can release microfibers in the atmosphere from their vents. Consider
using something like a clothesline.
